What types of data storage exist?

There are many types of storage available for a system to be able to access data.
The most common is internal storage. This is the same as your home computer where there are hard drives in your computer connected to a controller card or directly to the motherboard. Most of these hard drives contain platters that spin at a high rate of speed with a read head to access the data but recently a better technology has been gaining ground called Solid State Drive or SSD. This type of drive has no moving parts.
In a sever environment, where uptime and data integrity are important, if internal storage is used it is usually implemented using a method of combining multiple disks in a way that the operating system sees them as a single disk. This is called a RAID and depending on the configuration allows for one or more disks to fail without data loss.
Other common types of storage are:
DAS (direct attached storage)
NAS (network attached storage)
SAN (serial attached storage)
